Family Matters: Family ties
Ruth 4:1 – 12 (p.189 – 190)

A responsibility  to the family

  1. Pro – family
    1. What is best for the family  comes first
  2. Family Breakdown
    1. Sin is at the center- selfishness
    2. When we focus on the individual more than the group, the group will suffer
  3. “Strong-group” culture
    1. The group (family) is more important than the individual
  4. “Weak-group” culture
    1. Individual comes first    
    2. There is pressure to raise strong individuals
  5. Family value test
    1. Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:1-12)
      1. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
        1. Strong-group: yes
        2. Week-group: please clarify

The Kinsman - redeemer

  1. Someone who could redeemed or buy back property or persons (Leviticus 25:25)
  2. The benefit was for the family member
  3. Jesus as our kinsman-redeemer
    1. We owe a debt we cannot pay
    2. Jesus paid our debt and we benefit from it.

Family first to Christ first

  1. Family loyalty is the example not the goal            
    1. One bond greater
      1. Christ and His Family
  2. Jesus example (Luke 8:19 – 21)
  3. It’s not about me, it’s about the family!

“This is how we know what love is:  Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.  And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. “(1 John 3:16)
               
               
Going Deeper

  1. Do I focus more on what I can gain from my family or what I can give to my biological family?  Christ’s  family? 
  1. What steps can I take to strengthen my commitment to my family and to Christ’s family?
  • Read Ruth 4:1-12. What would keep me from doing something that would benefit someone else?
