The Basics

Definitions

  1. Family
    1. “Primarily, one man and one woman united in matrimony plus natural or adopted children and, secondarily, any other persons related by blood.” (God, Marriage & Family)
  1. Immediate Family
    1. “Spouse, parents and grandparents, children and grand children, brothers and sisters, mother in law and father in law, brothers in law and sisters in law, daughters in law and sons in law. Adopted and step members are also included in immediate family.” (Business Dictionary.com)
  1. An institution
    1. A social structure

Is the family in jeopardy?

  1. The family will always be threatened
    1. A world system opposes it (Eph. 2:1-2)
  1. Challenges of today
    1. No privacy
    2. Communication has changed
    3. Choices are a right
    4. Rejection of Authority
  2. Hope
    1. Youth and young adults still value family
    2. God can redeem the family

The Family was established

  1. Adam & Eve
    1. Eve was “a corresponding helper” (2:18)
    2. One flesh (2:24)
    3. Nakedness (2:25)
  1. Leaving and cleaving (2:24)
    1. God blesses the union
  1. The beginning of parenting
    1. Cain & Abel(ch.4)
  1. Two important responsibilities
    1. Nurturing
    2. Education

Family and Discipleship

  1. Follow Christ in the way we live out our family relationships
  1. Teach our children that following Christ is the most important thing in their life (Luke 14:26)


Going Deeper

  1. Take time to tell each one in your immediate family how much you appreciate them.  Thank God for your family.
  1. How has your commitment to Jesus Christ made a difference in your family?  How can it make a difference in the future?
  • Read the Parable of the Lost Son (Luke 15:11 – 32), what can we learn about family relationships in this parable?  What can we learn about being part of the family of God?
