"Lessons on Spiritual Passion: Counter Punch"

Sermon Outline

Lessons on Spiritual Passion:
Restoring Passion: The Counter Punch
Judges 2:1-11 (p.170 – 171))

Breaking The Cycle

  1. God wants it to stop!
  2. We are results oriented
    1. Good or bad (consequences)
  3. We need to deliver the knockout punch
  4. Maintain a passion for God
    1. Have eyes for Him only
    2. Hold the covenant that we have entered into in high regard

The Importance Of The Covenant (v.1 – 4)

  1. Binds two parties together
    1. Of equal parties
    2. Stronger and weaker parties (God’s covenant with Israel)
  2. The covenant was the lifeline for the Israelites
  3.  The covenant included both blessings and curses (Joshua 24:20)
  4. God meant what He said
    1. Yet they chose to walk away
  5. There is still a covenant

The New Covenant (Mt. 26:28)

  1. Every time we take communion we should think of this covenant
  2. God is serious about His covenant
    1. He sealed the covenant with the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13 – 14)
  3. If we are serious we will…
    1. Be committed to always serving and worshipping God
    2. Always acknowledge that the blessings from God are greater than the rewards of this world
    3. Keep our promise
    4. Pass it on to the next generation

Impact Future Generations (v. 10 – 11)

  1. We cannot neglect our spiritual growth for the sake of our children
    1. Remember they learn from example
  2. Make sure ignorance is  not an issue (Proverbs 22:6)
    1. There is a choice
    2. Empower them to make the right choice
  3. Teach them the importance of the covenant
    1. A commitment to God is more important than any other

Passion is maintained and passed on through a promise kept!

Going Deeper

  1. How does looking at your relationship with God as a covenant differ from how you have looked at it before?
  2. What changes are you willing to make to reflect the importance of your relationship with God to your children?
  3. Reflect on these passages on a covenant:

       Exodus 19 – 21, Joshua 24:1-27, Hebrews 9:11 - 28
