Keep Fighting the Good Fight
Judges 2:10-19 (p.171)

Stay Passionate

  1. Be alert ( 1 Peter 5:8)
  2. Surrounded by temptations
  3. The battle is real!

The Book of Judges

  1. After Joshua’s death
  2. Before Israel had a king
  3. They had entered Canaan
    1. God was giving them the land
    2. Still land to be taken
    3. God knew the influence the Canaanites would have

A  Book of Cycles  (Old Testament Challenge)

  1. The reality, not the ideal

 

Two Themes

  1. Israel’s decline
    1. Not a book of heroes
    2. The disobedience of the people
    3. Examples from chapters 17 -21
  1. God’s gracious deliverance
    1. As many times as they failed God delivered
    2. Must not overlook God’s compassion

 

Judge

  1. Raised up by God to deliver Israel
    1. Empowered by God
  2. A political leader
    1. Ruled through a time of peace
  3. Each one had a different story

Complacency

  1. The place where the passion is lost
  2. We get bored with peace
    1. Leads to seeing what we can get away with
  3. Entropy
    1. Disorder(21:25)
    2. If we don’t need God we don’t need others

Signs of a Lack of Passion

  1. Settling before the task is complete (2:1-2)
    1. Chapter 1 showed there was danger ahead
    2. We must remain obedient
    3. No compromise
  2. Not preparing our children (2:10 – 11)
    1. We are not only fighting for our children but teaching them how to fight as well (Deut. 6:1-2)
    2.  We pass on to our children what is important to us

Going Deeper

  1. Are there areas of compromise in your life?  If so, identify them and ask God to help you follow through with what He wants.
  2. Ask your children if they  know what is important to you.
