Sermon Outline

See What We’ve Had All Along
Luke 15:11 – 32 (p.740)

The Father

  • Loved both sons
  • Ran to the younger son
  • Pleaded with the older
  • Provided for both sons
  • Extravagant love
  • Foundation for all blessings
  • Love brings us back to God

The Younger Son

  • Do not glamorize him
  • Potential alone does not matter
  • He was “dead” (v.32)
  • Rebellious nature
  • A lack of trust and faith
  • Disrespectful
  • Uncaring & selfish

The Younger Son Gave Up…

  • Wealth
  • Did not spend it wisely
  • Provisions
  • Had plenty to eat
  • Security
  • Loving father
  • He was alone
  • Father’s wisdom
  • God’s wisdom is not of this world

He Came to His Senses

  • Realized what he had left behind
  • True repentance
  • Father’s embrace & acceptance
  • The lost being found (sinner coming to God)
  • The change has to be within us
  • Complete Restoration
  • Restored as a son

The Older Son

  • Same position as his brother
  • Did not recognize the value of what He had
  • Always with the Father
  • Should have been more like him
  • We overlook God’s power
  • The value of a brother
  • Not a threat
  • Guaranteed inheritance for all family members
  • God seeks the lost

The Family Treasure

  • Grace
  • The younger son embraced it!
  • The older son denied it!
    • Don’t squander God’s Grace!
