September 20, 2009 - "A Reflection of Belief"

Sermon Outline

A Reflection of Belief: Faith or Doubt
James 1:5-8

The Faith & Doubt Tension

  • The two extremes (light & darkness)
  • A very strong faith
  • Complete doubt (atheism)
  • Our cry
  • “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.” (Mark 9:24)
  • There is room for our faith to grow

Double-minded

  • Dubious and undecided
  • Complicates life
  • Trying to cover our bases
  • Focus on the what if’s
  • Fear can paralyze
  • We must take the step of faith
  • Selfishness

We must believe…

  • God exists (Hebrews 11:6)
  • Beware of preconceived ideas
  • If God doesn’t measure up than we begin questioning God’s existence
  • Start with a clean slate
  • Scripture raises the bar for our faith
  • Reveals what God can do
  • Reveals what God wants to do
  • The power of God
  • God can do the impossible
  • What He wants to do for us speaks of His heart
  • The will of God
  • Much more than just the plans  of God
  • His desires
  • God has no limits
  • Are we embracing Him as being the loving and caring God that He is?

Build our belief on Scripture

  • Ask and receive
  • James 1:5
  • Luke 11:9
  • Move mountains
  • Mt. 17:20
  • Saved through faith
  • Ephesians 2:8

Faith simplifies our lives

  • What if’s are only obstacles to us not to God
  • Endless possibilities of faith
  • If we try to live the safe life, we will miss how big God really is!
