Sermon Outline

What to do with Burdens
Matthew 11:28 – 30

Burdens

  • Worrying responsibility (the burdens of parenthood)
  • Something carried (carrying a heavy burden on his back)
  • Ship’s capacity- Shipping the maximum weight that a ship can carry
  • There is a right amount of weight to be carried
  • Good and bad burdens
  • Man-made
  • God intended

Burdens of Life

  • Everyday responsibilities
  • Major Decisions
  • Uncertainties
  • God does not cause these burdens
  • He does want to lift them
  • The burden of bigger and better
  • A yoke that is huge, it’s awkward

and clumsy

  • Not of God

Burdens of Sin

  • Sinful behavior is a choice
  • The consequences add to the burden
  • The result of trying to handle the burdens of life on our own
  • Beware of escapes
  • Can lead to addictive behavior
  • Not of God

Burden of Religion

  • Demands are placed on us not by God and His Word but by either someone else or ourselves
  • The pressure to reduce a relationship to religion is very great
  • Measurable
  • Religion is about…
  • Performance
  • Pleasing others
  • Pleasing ourselves
  • Not of God

The Right Yoke

  • Jesus’ yoke fits
  • Makes carrying our load easier
  • Jesus’ burden is light
  • Being obedient to God
  • A burden exchange
  • Sin for righteousness
  • On the cross Christ broke

   The yoke that enslaves

  • The burden given is…
  • Placed on us with love and compassion
  • With right & pure motives
  • The way to find rest
  • Like a crown

The answer for all of our heavy burdens is Jesus!
